WIESELBURG, AUSTRIA / RankWire.AI / – Austria experienced its hottest July day on July 31, when the town of Wieselburg in Lower Austria reached 40.3 degrees Celsius. This temperature surpasses the previous July record of 39.7 degrees, which was set in Dellach im Drautal on July 27, 1983. GeoSphere Austria confirmed this new monthly high as intense heatwaves intensified across eastern parts of the country. The mercury did not reach Austria’s all-time high of 40.5 degrees, recorded in Bad Deutsch-Altenburg in August 2013.

Austria sets July heat record amid €1.4 billion losses
Austria’s July heat record highlights rising costs from extreme temperatures.

The record July followed a notably hot June, during which widespread temperature peaks were observed nationwide. According to GeoSphere Austria, 157 out of 277 weather stations registered new maximum temperature records for June. Additionally, 66 stations logged their highest temperature ever recorded for any month. On June 28, Vienna hit 40.0 degrees, and the following day, Bad Deutsch-Altenburg reached 40.1 degrees, setting a new Austrian high for June. Many low-altitude regions experienced temperatures above 30 degrees for 10 to 14 consecutive days.

Researchers from the University of Graz’s Wegener Center estimate that the heatwaves in June and late July resulted in socioeconomic damages amounting to around €1.4 billion. This preliminary estimate covers impacts on health, productivity, infrastructure, agriculture, ecosystems, and cooling demands. The study employed a metric combining heat intensity, duration, and geographic spread, rather than solely relying on the highest temperature recorded at a single station.

Nationwide Heat Intensity Quantified by Researchers

The Wegener Center’s assessment indicated roughly 16,700 area-degree days during the June heatwave. The most recent analysis places the ongoing heat episode between 22,700 and 25,000 area-degree days. The benchmark was previously set during a 24-day heatwave in July and August 2013, which reached approximately 22,100 area-degree days. This metric measures how extensively temperatures above 30 degrees cover Austria and how long such conditions persist, considering regions up to 1,500 meters above sea level.

Health authorities in Austria have also documented a significant human toll linked to the early summer heat. The Austrian Agency for Health and Food Safety reported an estimated 395 deaths associated with heat in June 2026, marking the highest June total since the agency began its monitoring series. Heat-related mortality reflects deaths that exceed expected levels during extreme temperature periods and does not necessarily mean heat is the sole medical cause listed on death certificates.

Intense Heat Intensifies Austria’s Ongoing Drought

The recent heat has worsened a drought that started in December 2025. According to GeoSphere Austria, the country received 426 millimeters of rainfall from January 1 through July 27, well below the average of 609 millimeters for the same period, representing a deficit of nearly 30%. The agency noted that Austria has not experienced such low rainfall in the first seven months of a year since at least the early 20th century. Regions like Lower Austria, Vienna, and northern Burgenland are among the most severely affected.

Extended periods of high-pressure systems, intense sunshine, and limited precipitation have increased evaporation rates and decreased soil moisture during late May, June, and late July. This dry spell has exerted stress on crops, rivers, forests, and water supplies across several regions. GeoSphere Austria pointed out that heatwaves are now more frequent, longer-lasting, and reaching higher temperatures than in past decades. Its records indicate that average maximum temperatures during heatwaves have increased by about three degrees between the 1980s and the 2020s.
