KATHMANDU, NEPAL / RankWire.AI / – Nepal projects a need for approximately $4.78 billion to rebuild after the catastrophic floods along the Bhote Koshi River. This estimate was issued by the government through its Rapid Damage and Needs Assessment following the disaster on August 26. The assessment indicates that direct physical damage amounts to about $1.8 billion, while economic losses are estimated at roughly $883 million. Officials clarified that these figures encompass damage across social, productive, and infrastructure sectors. Communities and vital infrastructure across districts such as Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, and others were affected by the floods.

For immediate reconstruction and recovery efforts over the next six months, Nepal anticipates requiring around $57.67 million. The total estimate for longer-term rebuilding efforts reaches approximately $4.71 billion. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that the government has shared the rapid assessment results with relevant agencies. Additionally, a comprehensive Post Disaster Needs Assessment is currently underway to evaluate the full scope of damages and reconstruction needs. The government continues efforts to restore transportation, electricity, and telecommunications infrastructure, while relief and recovery activities remain ongoing.

The floods on August 26 inflicted extensive damage to homes, roads, bridges, and power infrastructure along the Bhote Koshi river basin. Earlier assessments indicated that around 7,570 residences were impacted, affecting about 32,933 individuals. Damage also affected 48 government offices. Approximately 55 kilometers of roads, 37 motorable bridges, and 68 suspension bridges sustained harm. Floodwaters damaged roughly 1,806 hectares of farmland. The government also reported damage to 13 hydropower projects, one solar plant, and two transmission lines.

Flood effects span transportation and energy sectors

The disaster impacted roughly 783 megawatts of hydropower capacity in Nepal. The extent of destruction has complicated access to several affected regions. Authorities continue to clear roads and carry out site recovery work while repairing critical links. An Acrow bridge over the Tadi River at Devighat has been reopened to the public after installation. Meanwhile, government teams are working to remove obstructions along damaged routes. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that Nepal has mobilized domestic resources and received support from international partners during the emergency response.

Search and rescue efforts have persisted alongside the assessment of recovery needs. By September 11, authorities had rescued 13,676 individuals, including over 320 foreign nationals. About 5,130 people remained missing, among them roughly 600 foreigners from approximately 35 countries. The bodies of 1,385 victims have been recovered from flood-affected areas. Officials noted that these numbers are subject to updates as recovery and verification work continue. Forensic experts from various countries have collaborated with Nepal Police and other agencies on DNA collection, analysis, and the identification of recovered remains.

Long-term rebuilding requirements outlined in recovery assessment

The floods also generated significant debris across impacted communities and infrastructure routes. The United Nations Development Programme estimated that at least 2.2 million tonnes of debris are present within analyzed regions. Its preliminary evaluation revealed that 11 hydropower stations and one solar plant have ceased operations, with a combined capacity of 431.1 megawatts. The agency further noted damage to 15 power projects under construction, totaling a planned capacity of 470 megawatts. These findings form part of the broader effort to assess infrastructure damage and recovery needs.

The government’s reconstruction estimate remains based on the rapid assessment while a detailed national review continues. The United Nations Development Programme indicated that the comprehensive assessment will determine the full extent of damages, losses, and rebuilding requirements. Meanwhile, authorities persist with search operations, infrastructure repairs, and the distribution of relief supplies to affected communities. The government has also requested specialized equipment, including drones, bridge systems, testing kits, and pumping machinery. The current $4.78 billion figure represents Nepal’s primary official estimate of the financial resources needed for reconstruction.
