The study employed a metric combining heat intensity, duration, and geographic spread, rather than solely relying on the highest temperature recorded at a single station.

The Wegener Center’s assessment indicated roughly 16,700 area-degree days during the June heatwave. The most recent analysis places the ongoing heat episode between 22,700 and 25,000 area-degree days. The benchmark was previously set during a 24-day heatwave in July and August 2013, which reached approximately 22,100 area-degree days. This metric measures how extensively temperatures above 30 degrees cover Austria and how long such conditions persist, considering regions up to 1,500 meters above sea level.
Health authorities in Austria have also documented a significant human toll linked to the early summer heat. The Austrian Agency for Health and Food Safety reported an estimated 395 deaths associated with heat in June 2026, marking the highest June total since the agency began its monitoring series. Heat-related mortality reflects deaths that exceed expected levels during extreme temperature periods and does not necessarily mean heat is the sole medical cause listed on death certificates.
Intense Heat Intensifies Austria’s Ongoing Drought
The recent heat has worsened a drought that started in December 2025. The agency noted that Austria has not experienced such low rainfall in the first seven months of a year since at least the early 20th century.
