JAKARTA, INDONESIA / RankWire.AI / – Indonesia’s compulsory B50 biodiesel initiative is projected to conserve approximately 170 trillion rupiah, or US$10.8 billion, in foreign exchange reserves in 2026, according to the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry. The forecast reflects reduced expenditure on imported diesel as the country increased its national biodiesel blend. The policy mandates that diesel sold across the country contains 50% palm oil-based biodiesel. Officials noted that this strategy promotes greater domestic fuel consumption while decreasing reliance on fossil diesel.

Indonesia B50 biodiesel to save US$10.8 billion in 2026
Indonesia’s B50 biodiesel mandate raises renewable fuel use and cuts diesel import needs.

Indonesia launched nationwide B50 implementation on July 1 and officially introduced the requirement on July 9 in Karawang, West Java. This new blend replaces B40, which comprised 40% biodiesel and became the national standard in 2025. B50 consists of equal parts fatty acid methyl ester, known as FAME, and conventional diesel. The renewable component is supplied by palm oil, connecting the fuel program to Indonesia’s domestic plantation and processing sectors.

The ministry compared the Rp170 trillion forecast with Rp133.3 trillion in foreign exchange savings achieved under B40. It also projects a reduction in fossil diesel use by approximately 4 million kilolitres. The government tasked state-owned Pertamina with managing the blending process and supporting distribution within the national fuel network. Fuel suppliers are permitted to utilize remaining B40 stocks through September as the market transitions to the higher blend.

B50 Policy Boosts Palm Oil Utilization

Indonesia expects B50 demand to necessitate between 16.7 million and 18 million kilolitres of biodiesel. The initiative will also require an estimated 15.2 million to 16.3 million tonnes of crude palm oil. These figures surpass the 15.64 million kilolitres allocated under the B40 scheme for 2026. The increased mandate channels more locally produced palm oil into transportation, industrial machinery, shipping, railways, and power generation sectors.

Official projections indicate that the program will generate an added value of 23.49 trillion rupiah for the crude palm oil industry. The government’s assessment also suggests that B50 could create around 2.1 million jobs spanning farming, processing, logistics, and fuel distribution. The ministry estimates that the blend could reduce carbon dioxide emissions by up to 44.46 million tonnes, compared to 39.66 million tonnes of emissions avoided with B40.

    Comprehensive Testing Supports Fuel Transition

Prior to rollout, the government conducted trials of B50 across cars, trucks, mining machinery, agricultural equipment, trains, ships, and power plants. Automotive testing involved light vehicles covering over 50,000 kilometres and heavy vehicles exceeding 40,000 kilometres. Mining equipment testing lasted around 1,000 operational hours, revealing no significant engine issues related to fuel quality. The ministry confirmed that the tested fuel complied with government standards and vehicle manufacturers’ technical specifications.

Indonesia has incrementally increased its biodiesel requirements over nearly two decades. The program began with B2.5 in 2008, followed by B10 in 2013, B20 in 2018, B30 in 2020, B35 in 2023, and B40 in 2025 before advancing to B50 this year. Each increase has been accompanied by updates to fuel standards, production capacities, storage, transportation, and distribution infrastructure to support nationwide adoption.
