SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA / RankWire.AI / – In August, South Korea’s foreign exchange reserves experienced their largest monthly expansion ever, reaching $442.28 billion by the end of the month, according to the Bank of Korea. This marked a growth of $14.33 billion compared to $427.95 billion at the close of July. The increase was the most significant since the series of reserve data began in 1971 and also represented the highest level since May 2022.

South Korea reserves climb record $14.33 billion in August
South Korea’s foreign exchange reserves reached $442.28 billion at the end of August.

The August rise continued a three-month recovery trend in South Korea’s foreign reserves, following increases of $370 million in June and $590 million in July. The recorded growth in August surpassed these figures and set a new record, exceeding the previous monthly high of $14.29 billion set in May 2009. Despite this sharp growth, reserves are still below the peak of $469.21 billion reported in October 2021.

The central bank attributed the surge to multiple measurable factors during August. Financial institutions increased their holdings of foreign currency deposits, contributing to the overall rise. Additionally, returns generated on reserve assets boosted the total, while currency fluctuations affected the dollar value of assets denominated in other currencies. Since the Bank of Korea assesses the country’s reserves in U.S. dollars, exchange rate movements can influence their reported value without altering the actual volume of foreign assets.

Foreign securities remain the leading component of reserves

By the end of August, foreign securities accounted for most of South Korea’s foreign exchange reserves. Their total value rose by $7.07 billion from July to $387.07 billion, representing 87.5% of the nation’s overall reserve holdings. This category encompasses government and corporate securities kept as reserve assets. The value of foreign currency deposits also saw a substantial increase, climbing by $7.17 billion during August to reach $30.30 billion by month’s end.

During August, special drawing rights increased by $60 million to $15.77 billion. South Korea’s reserve position stood at approximately $4.34 billion, while gold holdings remained stable at $4.79 billion. The data indicates that securities continue to dominate the reserve portfolio despite the significant growth in deposits. The combined increase in securities and foreign currency deposits accounted for nearly all of the $14.33 billion monthly rise in South Korea’s official foreign reserves.

Reserves hit four-year high with August boost

The reserve balance of $442.28 billion marks the highest level in over four years. South Korea’s reserves last exceeded this amount in May 2022, when they stood at $447.71 billion. The latest figures also bring the country closer to the pre-decline levels following the October 2021 peak. Official foreign reserves encompass securities, deposits, gold, special drawing rights, and the country’s reserve position within the international monetary system.

Foreign exchange reserves serve as a stockpile of foreign currency assets that support international payments and external financial commitments. The South Korean government releases these figures monthly, providing markets with regular insights into the country’s reserve status. August’s data included both the largest monthly increase and the highest total since May 2022. This change marks a notable rebound from the smaller reserve gains of June and July, although the total remains below South Korea’s historical maximum.
