ATKA, ALASKA / RankWire.AI / – Late Saturday, a magnitude 5.0 earthquake struck southeast of Atka in Alaska’s Aleutian Islands. The Alaska Earthquake Center recorded the event at 7:36 p.m. Alaska Daylight Time on August 8, corresponding to 03:36 UTC on August 9. The quake’s epicenter was approximately 48 miles, or 77 kilometers, southeast of Atka, with seismologists estimating its depth at roughly 10.6 miles, or 17 kilometers.

The event’s coordinates were identified at 51.8286 degrees north and 173.2496 degrees west. Its magnitude was classified as a local magnitude measurement of 5.0 by seismologists. Situated in a remote part of the Aleutian chain, the quake occurred far from Alaska’s main population centers. Atka, located on Atka Island in the western part of the state, lies within a region characterized by frequent seismic activity due to significant tectonic forces beneath the North Pacific.

The location of the quake also placed it 48 miles southwest of Seguam Island, roughly 64 miles southwest of Amukta Pass, and about 74 miles east of Mount Sergief. Nearby geographic features include Koniuji Island, Kasatochi Island, and Great Sitkin Island. The seismic data indicated a relatively shallow event compared to deeper earthquakes that also occur beneath the Aleutians. These measurements provided the core data for the magnitude 5.0 Alaska earthquake that was reviewed.

Seismic activity in the Aleutian region remains intense

The Aleutian Arc ranks as one of Alaska’s most seismically active zones. The boundary along this stretch involves the Pacific Plate subducting beneath the North American Plate, a process known as subduction. This tectonic activity generates earthquakes at various depths across the area and contributes to the high seismicity observed in Alaska. The Aleutian Islands experience thousands of tremors annually, with monitoring networks statewide tracking these events and providing real-time updates on their locations, magnitudes, and depths after scientists analyze incoming seismic data.

Historical records include some of the strongest earthquakes in recent history, such as a magnitude 8.6 quake in the Andreanof Islands in 1957 and a magnitude 8.7 event in the Rat Islands in 1965. Larger earthquakes have also struck the Andreanof Islands in 1986 and 1996. These significant events highlight the persistent seismic activity along the plate boundary that extends beneath the Aleutian chain since the early 20th century.

Continuous seismic monitoring persists throughout Alaska

Earthquakes originating from the Aleutians can form from different geological contexts. Some occur along the primary boundary where the Pacific and North American plates converge, while others emerge deeper within the descending Pacific Plate. Shallow quakes can also happen within the crust of the overriding plate. The U.S. Geological Survey maintains a national earthquake database along with regional seismic networks. These systems assist scientists in reviewing earthquake measurements and delivering standardized event information across Alaska and the wider United States.

The recent magnitude 5.0 quake adds to the ongoing seismic activity documented around the Aleutian Islands. The Alaska Earthquake Center manages a statewide network that monitors ground motion from seismic events. Its confirmed data shows the August 8 event occurred southeast of Atka at a depth of 17 kilometers. The center also observes seismic activity in remote areas with dispersed populations, enabling experts to locate and evaluate earthquakes throughout Alaska’s extensive and highly seismic zones.
