Department for Energy Security and Net Zero Reports UK Solar Capacity at 22.8 GW Ahead of Plug-In Solar Rollout

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM / RankWire.AI / – UK solar capacity reached 22.8 gigawatts by the end of June 2026, reflecting a significant acceleration in deployment. Data from the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero indicate around 2.076 million installations nationwide. In June alone, developers added 27,391 systems, generating 132 megawatts. These preliminary figures are subject to revision as additional projects are incorporated into the official record. The total encompasses rooftop arrays, commercial installations, and large-scale solar farms, establishing a baseline before new regulations for plug-in solar systems take effect.

UK solar capacity reaches 22.8 GW before plug-in launch
UK solar capacity reaches 22.8 GW as plug-in rules prepare for an August launch.

June marked the second-highest monthly installation count ever recorded in the UK, surpassed only by March 2026, which saw 28,782 installations. Over the year ending in June, solar capacity grew by 2.2 gigawatts, a 10.9% increase. The country also achieved a record 269,000 installations in 2025, the highest annual total so far. Most of these installations were on residential, commercial, and other building types, while utility-scale projects continued to boost the nation’s overall solar generation capacity.

The next regulatory update is scheduled for August 27, when amendments concerning plug-in solar systems will be implemented. These changes introduce an approval process for small generators that connect via a standard UK plug and socket. Such devices may provide up to 800 watts of alternating current output, must operate in conjunction with the electricity distribution network, and meet the requirements of Interim Product Specification version 2. Importantly, the framework excludes plug-in batteries and products intended for storing electricity imported from household circuits.

Safety standards define plug-in system requirements

The new framework modifies the Plugs and Sockets Safety Regulations 1994 and the Electricity Safety, Quality and Continuity Regulations 2002. The statutory instrument was delivered to Parliament on July 17, a day following its announcement by ministers. An authorized body may approve a standard plug that complies with relevant BS 1363 standards and the product specifications. This exception addresses current restrictions on plugs used for connecting generating equipment to sockets. While product approval covers the entire UK, the electricity safety amendments are applicable in England, Wales, and Scotland.

The interim specifications encompass electrical design, British plug standards, mounting systems, fire safety, and labeling requirements. These criteria determine whether equipment is legally permitted for sale and connection. A study assessing electrical safety tested representative plug-in solar systems connected to UK domestic wiring, demonstrating stable operation under tested conditions, with no persistent unsafe energization or thermal hazards. The study also highlighted differences in product quality, including export limitations and electromagnetic compatibility, underpinning a UK-specific specification and providing clear guidance for consumers.

Consumer and industry preparations advance following public consultation

The government’s consultation attracted 466 responses from businesses, technical experts, regulators, and members of the public. Over 85% of respondents supported the interim product specification, with a majority also endorsing the proposed plug amendments. Contributors included energy suppliers, electricians, manufacturers, network operators, academics, and trade associations. Some raised concerns about older household wiring and the availability of non-compliant products via online marketplaces. Others cautioned that consumers might confuse the rules with permissions for plug-in batteries. The government intends to publish consumer guidance alongside the implementation of the new regulations.

Retailers such as B&Q, Currys, Amazon, and Lidl participated in preparations for the rollout of plug-in solar systems prior to the conclusion of the consultation. Designed for households unable to install traditional rooftop systems—such as some renters or residents with balconies or outdoor spaces—these devices are not included in the current capacity total for June, as they cannot operate under the new framework until after August 27. Starting on that date, only products approved under the new safety and capacity standards, meeting the 800-watt limit, will be permitted to connect through standard household sockets.
