The 2,758-TEU PanStar Acro departed from Busan New Port around 9 p.m. on August 22. The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries verified the departure details and released the itinerary. The vessel will navigate through the Northern Sea Route, making stops at three European ports. The entire round trip is scheduled for 45 days, concluding back in Busan on October 5.
PanStar Line Dot Com manages the ship, which carries 837 TEU during this Arctic shipping trial. Out of this total, approximately 737 TEU are commercial cargo, including chemical products, used vehicles, and automotive parts. The shipment also comprises 100 empty containers. The vessel is expected to reach Arctic waters by about August 30, with the section through the Arctic completed around September 7. Authorities estimate that the Arctic segment of the voyage will cover roughly 6,400 kilometers.
According to the official schedule, the vessel will stop at Felixstowe in the United Kingdom on September 9. Rotterdam in the Netherlands is next on September 11, followed by Gdansk in Poland on September 15. After completing its European ports, the ship will return to South Korea via the same Arctic route. The distance from Busan to Rotterdam along this route is approximately 13,000 kilometers. Throughout the journey, operational data will be collected to evaluate performance and other parameters.
Trial involves transporting commercial cargo to Europe
Prior to departure, the captain and navigation officers underwent specialized training focused on operations in polar conditions. An experienced polar navigator, who previously served aboard South Korea’s Araon icebreaking research vessel, participated as the chief officer. In addition to training, preparations included securing insurance, establishing emergency procedures, and handling administrative requirements for the voyage. Consultations with relevant nations and organizations were completed before departure, and a 24-hour communication system will ensure continuous connectivity during the Arctic passage.
This expedition signifies South Korea’s first attempt at a container ship voyage along the Northern Sea Route. While Korean shipping firms have previously operated other vessel types—such as bulk carriers and tankers—in Arctic waters, this marks their initial container operation since 2016. Unlike earlier tests, the vessel is carrying actual commercial cargo rather than conducting an empty demonstration run. The trial aims to gather data on technical, environmental, and commercial aspects related to container shipping through Arctic regions.
Data collection on northern route operations
Preparatory activities for the voyage commenced earlier in 2026, coordinated by a public-private council dedicated to Arctic shipping initiatives. The participating carrier was selected through a public competition held in May. Subsequent preparations involved assessing vessel readiness, cargo arrangements, crew staffing, insurance, and emergency protocols. Administrative procedures required for international navigation were also finalized before the August departure from Busan, with the planned passage over Russian northern waters.
The government classifies this journey as a trial rather than a regular container service. During the round trip, officials plan to record data on sailing distance, travel duration, fuel use, and operational costs. The project will also analyze cargo demand and other practical needs associated with Arctic container transportation. The scheduled European ports serve as both commercial cargo points and navigation test sites.
