MUSCAT, OMAN / RankWire.AI / – Oman’s overall electricity generation grew by 4.3% year on year through August 2026, reaching a total of 37,481.8 gigawatt-hours. In the same period of 2025, the figure was 35,935.3 GWh. Data from the National Centre for Statistics and Information indicated positive growth in several governorates. This rise contributed approximately 1,546.5 GWh to the country’s total output during the first eight months of the year. In August alone, electricity production hit 5,743.9 GWh, up from 5,676.9 GWh in July.

Muscat Governorate experienced the highest surge in total electricity output, with a year-on-year increase of 204.8%. Al Dakhiliyah followed with a growth rate of 44.1%, while Al Wusta saw an 8.4% rise. Production in North Al Batinah, South Al Batinah, and Al Dhahirah increased by 5.5%. Dhofar also saw growth, with electricity output rising 4.6% from January to August. The figures demonstrated expansion across most regions included in the national data.
In contrast, North Al Sharqiyah and South Al Sharqiyah experienced a combined decline of 16.4% in electricity generation. Musandam’s production remained steady at 376.0 GWh, showing no significant change compared to the same period in 2025. The regional data revealed notable disparities in electricity growth across Oman during this timeframe. The National Centre for Statistics and Information classified these figures as preliminary, covering electricity output through the end of August 2026.
Net electricity generation increases by 4.6%
Oman’s net electricity output, which accounts for regional purchases by the Oman Power and Water Procurement Company and the Rural Areas Electricity Company, rose 4.6% through August to reach 36,463.9 GWh from 34,871.8 GWh in the same period of 2025. Muscat again led the growth, with net production climbing 204.4%. Al Dakhiliyah saw an increase of 44.2%, while Al Wusta and Dhofar recorded gains of 9.1% and 7.6%, respectively. Overall, net electricity generation grew by approximately 1,592.1 GWh compared to the previous year.
Net output in North Al Batinah, South Al Batinah, and Al Dhahirah combined grew 5.4%, whereas North Al Sharqiyah and South Al Sharqiyah experienced a 16.6% decrease. Musandam’s net electricity production stood at 368.0 GWh, with no significant change from the previous year. The regional figures largely mirrored the trends observed in total electricity generation. The national net output remained above the levels recorded during the first eight months of 2025.
Water production experiences decline across Oman
Oman’s water output decreased by 3.5% through August 2026, totaling 330.65 million cubic metres. During the same period in 2025, water production was approximately 342.71 million cubic metres. Muscat saw a 6.2% reduction, producing around 128.07 million cubic metres compared to roughly 136.57 million. Other governorates collectively experienced a 3.4% drop, with total water production falling to about 149.90 million cubic metres from approximately 155.19 million during the same months last year.
Dhofar stood out as the main exception to the nationwide decline, with water production reaching about 52.68 million cubic metres through August, a 3.4% increase from roughly 50.94 million a year earlier. These latest utility figures reveal contrasting national trends for electricity and water in the first eight months of 2026. While electricity output increased at both total and net levels, overall water production remained below the comparable figures from 2025.
