Central Bank of Egypt Reports 27.2% Increase in Egyptian Remittances to $33.9 Billion

CAIRO, Egypt / RankWire.AI / – Remittances sent home by Egyptians working abroad experienced a 27.2% rise in the first eight months of 2026, reaching an all-time high of $33.9 billion. The Central Bank of Egypt announced these figures on Tuesday, October 13. During the same period in 2025, inflows totaled $26.6 billion, making the year-on-year increase approximately $7.3 billion. These latest statistics, covering January through August, reaffirm that transfers from Egyptian expatriates continued to grow in 2026, bolstering the country’s foreign currency reserves.

Remittances in August alone surged by 21.7% compared to the previous year, amounting to around $4.2 billion. In August 2025, inflows were about $3.5 billion. The monthly total in August 2026 decreased by roughly $300 million from July, when transfers reached $4.5 billion. Nonetheless, August contributed roughly $4.2 billion to the overall sum. Up to July 2026, remittances had already reached $29.7 billion, so the August figure increased the cumulative total by 14.1%.

This upward trend has persisted for over two years. Since the Central Bank implemented exchange-rate reforms in March 2024—shifting toward a more adaptable exchange-rate system and tightening monetary policy—official remittance channels have steadily expanded. The government has actively promoted the use of formal banking systems for money transfers instead of the parallel market, and financial services for Egyptians abroad have been broadened.

Remittances Bolster Egypt’s External Financial Position

Among Egypt’s primary sources of foreign currency, remittances play a vital role. These inflows help strengthen foreign-currency liquidity within the banking sector and reduce pressure on the nation’s external accounts. In the fiscal year 2025/2026, which concluded in June, remittances increased by 29.6% to $47.3 billion, up from $36.5 billion the previous year. The recovery of tourism earnings and Suez Canal receipts also contributed to limiting the growth of Egypt’s current account deficit during this period.

Robust remittance flows have coincided with gains in Egypt’s foreign reserves. According to central bank data, net international reserves reached a record $57.2 billion at the end of August 2026. These transfers are also a key component of Egypt’s economic reform efforts with the International Monetary Fund, which are scheduled to conclude in December. Increased inflows provide policymakers with additional foreign currency to manage import needs and external commitments.

IMF Anticipates Accelerated Growth for Egypt in 2026

According to the IMF’s latest World Economic Outlook, Egypt’s economy is projected to expand by 5.1% in 2026, up from 4.4% in 2025. The IMF also forecasts a slowdown to 4.7% growth in 2027. The current account deficit is expected to increase from 4.2% of gross domestic product in 2025 to 4.4% in 2026, reaching 4.9% of GDP in 2027.

Remittances totaled a record $41.5 billion in 2025, reflecting a 40.5% increase from the previous year. With $33.9 billion received by the end of August 2026, inflows have already accounted for about 82% of that annual total. The central bank’s monthly data will reveal whether this pace continues through the remaining four months. The government continues to advocate for Egyptians abroad to use formal transfer channels, emphasizing remittances as a central pillar of Egypt’s foreign currency earnings alongside tourism and Suez Canal revenue.
